Inverse problem of recovering the tsunami source by the r-solution method: a case study for the 2015 Iliapel tsunami, Chile

The problem of the determining a tsunami source  based on measurements of the tsunami waveforms recorded by remote receivers is set as inverse problem of mathematical physics. In this case, the numerical modeling is based on the linear shallow water theory. The problem in question is related to the class of ill-posed (conditionally correct) problems, for whose solution we use the method of least squares and the r-solution method. The approach proposed makes possible to avoid the inevitable instability of thenumerical solution to this ill-posed problem and moreover, to understand how the inversion result will change with changing the observational system used.
